Ghost nets are lost, abandoned, or discarded fishing nets that continue to drift through the ocean, trapping marine life long after they are no longer being used. Unlike traditional fishing gear in active use, these nets can continue catching fish, sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals indiscriminately. Made from durable synthetic materials, ghost nets can persist for years, damaging coral reefs and eventually breaking down into smaller plastic fragments.
